In general, taxpayers may elect to deduct losses from federally declared disasters, for example, from 2024 Hurricanes Helene & Milton, in the year prior to the year of loss, which is 2023.
With postponement of federal tax due dates due to disasters until May 1, 2025, eligible Florida taxpayers may be able to file their timely 2023 tax returns and consider losses sustained from these Hurricanes, instead of waiting to claim them with 2024 tax return filings.
